Title IX compliance is an issue that is widespread across all college campuses. Title IX states that, No one in the United States based on discrimination of sex, can be excluded from participation or be denied the benefits of, any education program or activity receiving federal funding. This means that colleges are responsible for making equal opportunities for both sexes.

Currently, according to data collected by NCAA Publications, many schools are not compliant with Title IX simply because they cannot afford to be without major cuts to other sports. Many more scholarships for women’s sports such as golf and crew are available because those sports create less revenue and they need a higher volume of players in order for those athletic industries to survive.

Title IX was passed in 1972 by congress. It wasn’t until 1994 that an amendment was put in place to allow the public to view the federal funding of each sport by gender. This was to ensure that equal opportunity for participation was given for both genders in every sport.

According to Christine Grant in an article by ESPN, Title IX compliance is essential to the success of equality in collegiate sports. She believes that Title IX is an excellent way to bring female presences into male dominant sports. It allows more opportunity for women to receive higher education through sports scholarships that were once only offered to men.
